• No one will ask my son
if he really thinks he can have it all: a family and a career.

But someone who means well will ask my daughter in low and serious tones, as though life’s front door were big enough for all his dreams, but she—she must take hers ‘round the back.

Sadness and rage war within me at the question, because I know that the answer is yes! and no! and maybe? and anyway, it’s the wrong question.

I want them both to know, son and daughter; that having it all is not a question of chromosomes, or privilege and power, or money on the balance sheet, but a particular gift of sight for which there is no substitute.

That whoever lies back to rest on the cool grass under the jigsaw canopy of branch and leaf, whoever stands on the shore and listens to the moon-sick waves hurl themselves upon the sand, whoever has eyes open to the miracles masquerading as ordinary human beings, whoever travels from sunrise to set with an open palm and not a clenched fiat, whoever has a willing heart and one full day upon the Earth,

already has it all.

  • Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
‭‭(Psalm‬ ‭100:3‬) It’s crucial to know not only that I am God but that I made you and you are Mine. You are a sheep of My pasture. Sheep have very limited understanding of what their shepherd is doing for them, but they follow him anyway. Similarly, as My “sheep,” your job is to trust Me and follow wherever I lead.” - an excerpt from Jesus Always by @jesuscalling (Sarah Young)
